Spirit of Health Outreach Program

Bus 2The Spirit of Health initiative is a mobile wellness and disease prevention outreach program that helps underserved neighborhoods throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania.  Designed to bring much-needed preventative care and health education to communities, the Spirit of Health began in 2003 as a partnership between the Sisters of St. Francis and Mercy's Parish/Congregational Nurse and Health Ministries Program.  The addition of Duquesne University Mylan School of Pharmacy as a partner allows for more comprehensive outreach and a greater community presence.  Residents served include those in the Pittsburgh neighborhoods of Carnegie, Etna, Lawrenceville, Millvale, South Side Hilltop, West End and downtown.  The ministry is committed to reaching out to those residing in underserved neighborhoods as well as women and children in need.

Students and faculty from the Mylan School of Pharmacy provide clinicalBus 1 care, screenings and health education utilizing the mobile health care unit provided by the Sisters of St. Francis.  Mercy Parish Nurses maintain a continuous presence within the community following the visits, offering health and wellness assistance and referral services.

In addition to serving those in need, the unique partnership provides Duquesne pharmacy students with hands-on experience in what is considered to be an emerging focus on the role of pharmacists-proactive community involvement in wellness, prevention and education.

The Spirit of Health mobile unit stemmed from a partnership between the Sisters of St. Francis at Mt. Alvernia and the Pittsburgh Mercy Health System.  The Spirit of Health is supported by grants, including a tobacco settlement grant, monies from contracts and through the in-kind services of Marcy Parish Nurses, the Sisters of St. Francis, and Duquesne University Mylan School of Pharmacy students and faculty.
