Reflection on the Seven Last Words of Christ

Leader: “We adore you, Lord Jesus Christ, here and in all your churches in the
whole world, and we bless you,
All: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.” (Testament)

Hymn

Antiphon: “The greatest love a person can have for friends is to give life for them.”
(John 15:13)

Though he was in the form of God,
Jesus did not count equality with God
something to be grasped at.

But emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
being born in human likeness.

Being found in human estate,
he humbled himself and became obedient,
obediently accepting death, even death on a cross!

Therefore God has highly exalted him
and bestowed on him the name
above every other name,

So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven, on the earth, and under the earth,
and every tongue proclaim to the glory of God:
JESUS CHRIST IS LORD! Glory…

Intercessions on the Seven Last Words of Our Crucified Jesus

Leader: “There is one thing of which we can all boast: we can boast of our
humiliations and in taking up daily the holy cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Omnibus of Sources, p. 81). “Forgive them, Father. They
don’t know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:24).
All: Jesus, crucified for love of us, unite God’s scattered children in the
Kingdom of salvation.

Leader: “I promise you that today you will be in paradise with me.” (Luke 23:43)
All: Jesus, crucified for love of us, may we die with you to rise with you in
glory.
Leader: “He is your son…She is your mother.” (John 19:26,27)
All: Jesus, crucified for love of us, may we share your sufferings with your
sorrowing mother who stood by you in life and in death.

Leader: “My God, my God, why did you abandon me?” (Matthew 27:46)
All: Jesus, crucified for love of us, free the human race from the powers of
darkness and grant it the gift of immortal glory.

Leader: “I am thirsty.” (John 19:28)
All: Jesus, crucified for love of us, draw all of us to yourself.

Leader: “It is finished.” (John 19:30)
All: Jesus, crucified for love of us, through your suffering and death, bring life
to your Bride, the Church.

Leader: “Father! In your hands, I place my spirit.” (Luke 23:46)
All: Jesus, crucified for love of us, gather all who have shared your death and
burial into the glory of your resurrection.

Leader: To save the sheep Jesus endured the agony of the cross. Let us now call to
God in the words which our shepherd and crucified Jesus gave us:
All: Our Father,…

Concluding Prayer of the San Damiano Crucifix (together)

Most High glorious God, cast your light into the darkness of my heart. Give me
right faith, certain hope, and perfect charity, and profound humility, with wisdom and perception, so that I may do your holy and true command. Amen.
