Praying with Scripture
God speaks to us first: this fundamental truth makes it possible for us to pray. God always takes the initiative, God desires to communicate with us. One of the ways we might pray is by using Scripture. Simply find a quiet and comfortable place and have your Bible and perhaps a small notebook or journal.
- Spend some time quieting yourself and relaxing.
- Ask God to give you what you need in this prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to inspire you.
- Select a short passage from Scripture – perhaps in one of the Gospels or another place
in the New Testament.

Praying with Scripture
|
- Read the passage through a few times to familiarize yourself with it.
- Be
conscious of your feelings, thoughts, reactions, desires, questions,
etc. as you read. Conscious of God’s love, address God. Tell God what
you are feeling, thinking, etc., what questions you have. Perhaps you
can “be” one of persons in the passage, i.e. the blind person, the
Samaritan woman at the well, a forgiven sinner.
- Respond to God, to Jesus in your own way.
- If there are any particular words or phrases that stay with you, savor them and stay as long as you can with them.
- Don’t
become discouraged if nothing “happens” during your prayer time. It is
only important that you are faithful to the time and effort. Just SHOW
UP and let God do the rest.
