Forms of Prayer
- Praying with Scripture
- God speaks to us first: this fundamental truth makes it possible for us to pray. God always takes the initiative, God desires to communicate with us. One of the ways we might pray is by using Scripture. Simply find a quiet and comfortable place and have your Bible and perhaps a small notebook or journal.
- The Mantra
- The mantra is a way of prayer that uses a simple, repetitive phrase in order to become more fully aware of God’s presence and our need for grace. Its beauty is that it is easily memorized and can be prayed as we go about our day.
- The Psalms
- A sacred hymn of praise, usually sung or chanted and taken in whole or in part from the Book of Psalms in the Old Testament.
- Formula Prayers
- Sometimes it is helpful to use the prayers we have been taught, such as the Lord’s Prayer, the Hail Mary, the Rosary, Psalm 23 (The Lord is My Shepherd) Sometimes the words of a familiar hymn are helpful, Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, etc.
