St. Francis 'Ohana Fair' on May 1

A free concert by local music legend Brother Noland and a midway of Xtreme Fun Rides are among the reasons to visit the St. Francis School Ohana Fair on Saturday, May 1.

The fair, which is the school's major fundraiser, will open at 10 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. on the campus at 2707 Pamoa Road, Honolulu, Hawaii.

The performance by Brother Noland will be at 1 p.m.Ohana fair The most memorable of his many island hits is the Hawaiian classic, "Coconut Girl," which was used in the soundtrack for the 2008 Sony action comedy movie, "Pineapple Express." Brother Noland is nominated for four Na Hoku Hanohano Awards this year, including Favorite Entertainer and Male Vocalist of the Year for his "Hawaiian Man" album.

Xtreme Fun Rides will include the Jumper, Shark Slide, Whirly Bird, Iron Man Obstacle Course, Turbo Tubs and a rock wall climb.

There will also be a silent auction at which fair-goers can bid on a 1997 Dodge Stratus "driven only by a nun." The car has only 28,000 miles.

Other items up for bid will include an iPad, hotel and restaurant certificates, Kikaida DVDs and handmade quilts.

There will also be an iPad available to win at the fair.

Mineral makeup artists will be on hand to show girls and women how to do eye shadow for 1/5 of the average retail cost of name brands.

The Franciscan Sisters Country Store will offer baked goods and homemade jams. Sister Eddie's Store, operated by 80-year-old Sister Mary Edward Sugioka, will feature a wide variety of goods created by the prolific craft-making nun. Hats, puppets, potholders, quilts, handbags, and dresses will be among her wares.

A Farmer's Market for fresh produce and a White Elephant shop offering lightly used household items will also be part of the fair.

Food booths will serve Hawaiian plates, Boston's Pizza, shaved ice, fried noodles, teri chicken, cotton candy, Kalua pork, lomi salmon, haupia, chicken long rice and malasadas.

Proceeds from the fair will be used for classroom, program, and campus improvements.
