Golfers Invited to Millvale, Pa. Golf Tournament

GOLFERS INVITED TO FIFTH ANNUAL SISTERS OF ST. FRANCIS,
MILLVALE GOLF TOURNAMENT 

Golf 4Pittsburgh, PA, April 15, 2009 – Golfers are invited to participate in the fifth annual Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities (Millvale) Golf Tournament on Monday, August 3, 2009 at Treesdale Country Club, One Arnold Palmer Drive in Gibsonia, Pa.

Participants will enjoy 18 holes of golf with a 12:00 p.m. shotgun start and opportunities to win a variety of unique skill and hole-in-one prizes. Lunch, dinner and a silent auction are also part of the day’s events. Sponsorships, underwriting support, golfers, silent auction items and gift certificates are welcome. Proceeds benefit the Spirit of Health mobile health van and NEighborhood Wellness Sites (NEWS).  

Sponsored by the Sisters of St. Francis, the Spirit of Health and NEWS offer convenient health screenings at no charge to people in need. The Spirit of Health provides everything from flu shots to Hepatitis C screening/testing as well as other basic screenings. In addition, NEWS provides direct outreach to senior centers and senior adult high-rise apartments, and serves more than 200 clients each month. Preventative health care services and health education are offered at no charge. 

The Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities, Millvale Golf Golf3Tournament is the major source of funding for these services. The past four golf tournaments have raised almost $200,000. As a result, services of the Spirit of Health van and NEWS have been expanded to reach more residents of the Pittsburgh region. In addition, NEWS is now offering a free legal clinic and free mental health counseling. 

With central administrative offices in Syracuse, N.Y., the Sisters of St. Francis represent a congregation of 546 vowed women religious who serve in the ministries of education, healthcare, pastoral care, the missions, social services and retreat work in 32 dioceses and archdioceses around the world, including Hawaii, Kenya,  Peru and Puerto Rico. In Millvale, the sisters are sponsors of Franciscan ministries that include:  Mount Alvernia High School; Mount Alvernia Day Care, Learning Center and Montessori Preschool; Franciscan Health Wellness Ministries; Tabor House of Prayer; and Change a Heart: Franciscan Volunteer Program.
