HONOLULU—If you "love" a good bargain while supporting a good cause, you won't want to miss World Wings International Hawaii Chapter's "Not Your Ordinary Garage Sale." This year's garage sale will be held on Sunday, Feb. 14, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a new location, McKinley High School cafeteria, and falls on Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year. This is the fifth consecutive year that proceeds of the garage sale will benefit St. Francis Hospice, the first and largest hospice program in Hawaii. A portion of the proceeds will also support CARE International's disaster relief efforts to Haiti. World Wings International is the philanthropic organization of former Pan Am flight attendants.
The past four garage sales have been held at Noelani School cafeteria. Due to the growing attendance at the garage sale each year, World Wings decided to relocate the garage sale to the bigger McKinley High School location. Those going to the garage sale are asked to use the Pensacola Street entrance into the parking lot.
Last year's garage sale was World Wings' most successful to date, raising more than $15,000. Many people lined up before the doors opened.
If you love "Things Japanese," there is a section featuring kimonos, obi, scrolls, dishes, and lacquerware, as well as sumo memorabilia, including autographed items, posters, sumo magazines and calendars, and rare yukata and tea cups. One of the members is a personal friend of Jesse "Takamiyama" Kuhaulua of Maui, Hawaii's first sumo champion and stable master.
In addition, there will be an International Boutique with unique finds from around the world, plus a wide assortment of clothing for men, women, and children, shoes and fashion accessories, household items, kitchenware, costume jewelry, holiday decorations, small appliances, collectibles, toys, books, CDs, DVDs, sporting goods, and other miscellaneous items, including Pan Am and other airline memorabilia.
"With the focus on 'being green' these days, the garage sale is a great place to find 'almost like new' clothing, jewelry and much more at bargain prices. You can splurge a little on yourself because it's Valentine's Day or it's a great way to start the Lunar Year. What woman can resist a good deal? You'll feel good knowing that your purchases will support a worthy cause," said Betty Santoki, vice president and fundraising chair of World Wings International Hawaii Chapter. All of the items are in good condition starting at 50 cents. Only cash will be accepted.
Proceeds from the garage sale will go towards maintaining and enhancing the hospice volunteer program. For more information on the garage sale, call 673-3724.
